Flagged ingredients

Full ingredient list

Flags are based on published ingredient lists and dermatology sources, not on testing this exact product. Formulation, concentration and whether a product is rinsed off all change real-world risk, and skin is individual. This is not medical advice. Patch test new products and see a dermatologist for persistent eczema or acne.

01 · Eczema-prone skin

Ingredients to avoid with eczema-prone skin

Eczema-prone skin has a weakened barrier, so allergens and irritants most people never notice can start a flare. Our eczema list is built from patch-test data published by the North American Contact Dermatitis Group, the American Contact Dermatitis Society allergen series, EU fragrance-allergen regulation and National Eczema Association guidance.

  • Fragrance and the fragrance allergens hiding inside it
  • Preservatives with high sensitisation rates: methylisothiazolinone, quaternium-15 and other formaldehyde releasers
  • Lanolin alcohol, propolis, balsam of Peru and colophony
  • Drying alcohols and harsh surfactants that strip a fragile barrier
02 · Acne-prone skin

Pore-clogging ingredients for acne-prone skin

For acne the question is whether an ingredient is likely to clog pores or irritate inflamed skin. Comedogenicity ratings come from the original rabbit-ear studies and later human re-evaluations, so we treat them as likelihoods, not verdicts, and weight ingredients near the top of the label more heavily.

  • Esters with a long comedogenic record: isopropyl myristate, isopropyl palmitate, myristyl myristate, laureth-4, oleth-3
  • Heavy butters and oils in leave-on face products
  • Acne-friendly ingredients such as niacinamide, azelaic acid, salicylic acid, ceramides and zinc PCA, called out as positives
Common questions

Good to know.

What is a skincare ingredient checker?

A skincare ingredient checker reads the ingredient list (the INCI list) on a product and compares each ingredient against ingredients known to cause problems for a particular skin type. Soraya’s checker does this for eczema-prone and acne-prone skin, scores the product from 0 to 100, and shows the study, regulation or medical-society guidance behind every flag.

Which ingredients should people with eczema avoid?

The most frequently cited triggers in patch-test data are fragrance and fragrance allergens, the preservatives methylisothiazolinone and methylchloroisothiazolinone, formaldehyde-releasing preservatives such as quaternium-15, lanolin alcohol, propolis, balsam of Peru, and harsh surfactants like sodium lauryl sulfate. Drying alcohols and exfoliating acids can also sting a compromised barrier. The full list we screen for is below.

What does the safety score mean?

100 means nothing on the label is known to trouble your skin type. Every flagged ingredient removes a share of the remaining score, weighted by how strong the evidence is and how high it sits on the label, so a product with several triggers scores far lower than one with a single trigger. 85 and above looks good, 65 to 84 is mostly fine, 40 to 64 calls for caution, and below 40 is best avoided.

How does the ingredient checker work?

You give us a product link, a pasted ingredient list, or a photo of the label. We read the full INCI list and compare each ingredient against ingredients that dermatology sources associate with eczema flares or with clogging pores in acne-prone skin. Every flag comes with the reasoning and the source.

Is this medical advice?

No. It is an educational screen based on published ingredient lists. Skin reactions are individual. Patch test new products and talk to a dermatologist about persistent eczema or acne.

Why does the same ingredient score differently for eczema and acne?

Because the risk is different. Salicylic acid can sting eczema-prone skin but is an evidence-based acne treatment. Coconut oil is a fine emollient for many eczema sufferers but may clog pores on an acne-prone face.

What if the link doesn’t work?

Some retailers block automated readers. Copy the ingredients from the product page and use the “Paste ingredients” tab, or photograph the label. Brand websites usually work directly.

Does Soraya store what I check?

Not in this version. Product pages are fetched to read the ingredient list and nothing about you is saved.

Methodology and sources

How the lists are built.

Every ingredient rule in this tool cites the published source it rests on: North American Contact Dermatitis Group patch-test results, the American Contact Dermatitis Society Core Allergen Series, EU Regulation 2023/1545 on fragrance allergens, the Fulton 1989 comedogenicity tables and later human re-evaluations, and guidance from the American Academy of Dermatology and the National Eczema Association. Ingredients that could not be substantiated by a credible source were removed rather than kept.

Scores start at 100. Each flagged ingredient removes a share of what remains, weighted by the strength of the evidence and by how high it sits on the label, so products with several triggers score far lower than products with one. Low-concern ingredients are shown as notes and barely move the score.

Ingredient lists reviewed against the sources above in September 2026. Built by Soraya. This is an educational screen, not medical advice.
